2022 Report on Angel Investing in Canada 110822

INTRODUCTION Investment Activity of Angel Organizations in 2021: An Overview

In aggregate, more investments were made in 2020 than in 2019, but the total amount invested, in dollar terms, was lower. Angel investment activity continued to recover through- out 2021, with both the number of investments and the amount invested rising in Q1 and Q2, with investment activity falling back marginally in the second half of the year (Figure 1). The number of deals peaked in Q2, fall- ing back slightly in Q3 and Q4. Nevertheless, the num- ber of deals was higher in the second half of the year than in Q1. The amount invested exhibited a different trend, peaking in Q3, and falling back slightly in Q4. These trends reflect the Canadian economy’s strong recovery in 2021 with economic activity reaching pre- COVID levels in the final quarter of the year, due to strong vaccination uptake and the reopening of the economy along with ongoing targeted government sup- port for households and businesses.
