Mobilizing Angel Activity in Yukon and Emerging Ecosystems

Results from a 2016 NOA survey of the investors and entrepreneurs identified the following:

Investors (97%) indicated they would very likely (92%) or likely (5%) recommend NOA to a friend or colleague. When asked if there was anything that they thought would improve support to investors, 58% of those responding to the survey selected “don’t change anything” and 33% were interested in training/workshops. There are over 470 Northern Ontario Angels, of which one quarter are actively investing.

97% of investors indicated they found the NOA experience a very rewarding or rewarding experience. 90% of entrepreneurs indicated they found the NOA experience worth the time and energy or a good use of time and energy.

Strong Leadership:

A 2019 investor satisfaction survey asked how NOA investors learned about the organization. Seventy- two percent of respondents indicated they learned about NOA through a current investor (39%) or word of mouth (33%). When investors were asked about the number of contacts they hadwith amember of the NOA team, 72% indicated they have contact between five and nine times per year and did not need to have increased contact. Scores for quality of service and knowledge of the NOA Executive Director/ Consultant ranged between 95-100%. NOA shares investment opportunities with their members through phone calls (61%) and emails (94%). The majority of investors (89%) prefer to receive NOA deal communication through email. Investors (77%) also expressed an interest in or possibly having an interest in accessing investment opportunities through a secure, online portal and contacted by email when there are new deals posted online. When asked about the quality of deals, 92% of respondents indicated the opportunities presented to them were either excellent (69%) or good (22%) and that they received sufficient information to make a decision.

As a volunteer, NOA Board members bring a vast array of skills, talents, and experience to the organization. There is representation from across Northern Ontario, which acts to inform the organization on community differences as well as similarities. The success experienced by NOA is a direct result of organizational leadership at all levels, active angel investors, and investment-ready entrepreneurs. Under the administrative direction of an Executive Director, the NOA has created a scalable, yet agile, operational model that works for investors, entrepreneurs, and employees across Northern Ontario . NOA employs an Executive Director and five part- time consultants who report into the Executive Director. Each consultant supports different geographic areas across Northern Ontario. The implementation of this part-time position started in Sault Ste. Marie in April 2011 followed by North Bay in August 2015, Sudbury in June 2016, Timmins in December 2017, and Kenora in the fall of 2018. Each consultant is contracted for a minimum of 20 hours/month and no more than 25 to 35 hours/month.
