2021 Report on Angel Investing in Canada

91

The Demand for Angel Investment 3.1 T wenty-four angel organizations reported their deal flow information for 2020. These angel organiza- tions received 6,539 requests for funding. This is a 24% increase on the figure that was reported for 2019 – but the relatively small number of organizations reporting this information in 2019 likely means that the scale of this increase in 2020 is exaggerated. Nevertheless, deal flow in 2020 was higher than in every year since 2015,

apart from 2017. COVID-19 has therefore not had a neg- ative impact on demand for capital from angel organiza- tions – indeed, demand is higher than in previous years – but with the caveat that annual trends are influenced by differences in the number of organizations reporting this information and that the shift to virtual throughout the pandemic has possibly resulted in more entrepre- neurs applying for funding through online web forms.
