2021 Report on Angel Investing in Canada

Executive Summary

The Investment Environment

C OVID-19 has had two main impacts on investment activity. The shift to online meetings and pitches has removed the geographical constraints on atten- dance, enabling more angels to participate. However, lockdown and the associated restrictions have created a disconnect between investors and the startup com- munity, which has reduced the opportunities for inves- tors to engage directly with entrepreneurs. Some angel

organizations reported that a portion of their members had disengaged because they were not interested in in- vesting if they could not meet the entrepreneurs in-per- son. It was also suggested by some respondents that the initial enthusiasm of angels to shift to online invest- ing has waned as the year progressed and ‘Zoom fa- tigue’ set in.
