investment is skewed to a small number of mega deals: just 72 investments of over $50 million accounted for almost three-quarters of the total amount invested. It is therefore more meaningful to make like-for-like com- parisons on the basis of size and stage of investment. Venture capital funds made only 128 rounds below $1 million – which is the typical investment focus of angel organizations – involving a total investment of just $43 million. There were 321 seed stage investments involving a total investment of $652 million and 292 early-stage investments involving a total of $5.13 billion. It needs to be emphasized that the angel organization invest- ments reported here only include the visible segment of the angel market; it does not cover all angel organiza- tions or include investments made by angels investing on their own and in informal organizations that typically go unrecorded. This once again underscores the critical role that angels play at the base of the entrepreneurial funnel.
