Executive Summary

The Investment Environment

A s in previous years, angel organization managers were asked to rate the current climate in Cana- da for angel investing on a scale of 1 (very poor) to 10 (excellent). Respondents submitted scores ranging from 2-9. The median score is 6, the same as in 2020, but lower than in the 2016-2019 period, where it was 7. The mean score is 6.1, again the same as in 2020 but lower than in previous years.

Groups reported that COVID-19 changed both investor behaviour and the ways in which angel organizations op- erated. Investors became more cautious and risk-averse in response to the uncertainties that the pandemic had created. Many paused their investment activity, focus- ing on supporting their existing investee companies. However, there was an appetite amongst some inves- tors to invest in pandemic-resilient opportunities.
