MOBILIZING ANGEL CAPITAL IN SOUTHERN ONTARIO

From 2021 to 2023, 16 Southern Ontario angel organizations are participating in the Southern Ontario Angel Community (SOAC) funding program administered by NACO and funded by FedDev Ontario. Total SOAC funding of $1.6 million was distributed between the following organizations: AngelOne, Brightspark Investors Club Ontario, Capital Angel Network, Georgian Angel Network, Golden Triangle Angel Network, Greensky Presidents Club, Halo Health, Keiretsu Forum, Maple Leaf Angels, Peterborough Region Angel Network, Southeastern Ontario Angel Network, Spark Angel Network, Windsor Essex Capital Angel Network, and York Angel Investors.

SOAC is intended to build angel investment capacity throughout Southern Ontario, which will strengthen the role of angel organizations in the investment community while facilitating increased levels of investment activity. Grant funding made possible by SOAC has significantly impacted numerous critical areas. During the project period, total investments made increased 29% over initial targets and total amount invested exceeded targets by 26%. CleanTech investment surpassed target levels by 79% and comprised 25% of total dollars invested. Partnerships established in Southern Ontario’s early-stage

ecosystem increased by 17%. Total investments made increased 29% over initial targets and total amount invested similarly exceeded targets by 26%. 5% more businesses were supported than initially anticipated. The number of investors who participated in funding rounds during the project period were 1,286% above target while the number of investment presentations and meetings conducted increased 75%. $32 in angel investment was generated for every $1 the federal government invested in Southern Ontario’s angel ecosystem.
