The Investment Climate for Angel Investing in 2021 4.1

A s in previous years, angel organization managers were asked to rate the current climate in Canada for angel investing on a scale of 1 (very poor) to 10 (excel- lent) (Figure 22).* Scores range from 2 to 9. The median score is 6.0, the same as in 2020 and 7.0 in the previous four years (2016-2019). The mean score is 6.1, again the same as in 2020 and lower than in previous years (2019: 6.4; 2018: 7.0; 2017: 6.6; 2016: 6.5; 2015: 6.5) (Figure 23). The lower score for 2020 was expected in view of the ongoing impact that COVID-19 had on the economy. What might not have been expected was, first, that the

drop was not greater, and second, the significant num- ber of organizations that rated the investment climate very good and the relatively small number that rated it as poor. In view of the increase in investment activity in 2021, it is perhaps surprising that there has been no change in the overall assessment of the investment cli- mate. However, as in 2020, a significant minority of or- ganizations gave a high rating to the investment climate, with 30% rating it at 8 or 9, a slightly higher proportion than in 2020 (26%).
