PETER MOREIRA

The number of startups in the Entrevestor Databank rose 4.5 percent to 771 in 2021, the slowest growth we’ve recorded in our nine years of writing this report. Some 125 companies launched last year, an increase from 2020 but this was well short of the record set in 2019. And we witnessed 100 or more failures in both 2020 and 2021, having never seen more than 60 a year previously. So the startup community is growing more slowly. (On a more positive note, we also saw a record 12 exits.)
