The Investment Climate for Angel Capital in 2022 4.1

A s in previous years, angel organization managers were asked to rate the current climate in Canada for angel investing on a scale of 1 (very poor) to 10 (ex- cellent). Their view of the investment climate reflects their opinion in early 2023 when this information was gathered. Scores range from 2 to 8 (Figure 26). Investment senti- ment has dropped sharply compared with the COVID-19 pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, and is much low- er than earlier years. The median score of 5 compares

with 6 in 2020 and 2021 and 7 in the previous four years (2016-2019). The mean score is 5.2, a drop from pre- vious years (2021: 6.1; 2020: 6.1; 2019: 6.4; 2018: 7.0; 2017: 6.6; 2016: 6.5; 2015: 6.5) (Figure 27). This is likely to reflect the deteriorating economic conditions during the second half of 2022 caused by rising inflation and interest rates along with the downturn in the tech sec- tor.
