2023 Report on Angel Investing in Canada 121923W6

INVESTMENT ACTIVITY IN 2022 Investment Characteristics: Regional Distribution

139

The angel organizations reporting in Atlantic Canada focus on slightly later-stage investments in deals that have received investment from earlier investors. New investments dominate in all three regions (Figure 22). However, whereas 61% of investments in Central Canada were new and 59% of investments in Atlan- tic Canada were new, in Western Canada new deals were much more dominant, accounting for 78% of all investments. A somewhat different picture emerges when the amount invested is considered. In both At- lantic Canada and Western Canada new investments dominate, accounting for 94% and 82% respectively of the amounts invested. Follow-on investments were much more common in Central Canada account- ing for 39% of the amount invested compared with 61% in new investments. As was the case in 2021, Western Canada has the highest level of investment activity based on the number of investments when calculated on a per-capita basis. However, Central Canada continues to dominate when the amount in- vested is calculated on a per capita basis, reflecting its much larger size of investments (Table 8).
