The Difference a Community Can Make

I n the summer of 2021, Dr. Karolina Valente and her company VoxCell BioInnovation stood out as key graduate of the Invention to Innovation (i2I) program at Simon Fraser University (SFU). Angel Forum keeps a close eye on programs such as SFU’s and subsequently we invited Karolina to present at our virtual meeting in October of the same year. Her pitch was enthusiastically received, and a number of our members engaged and initiated due diligence on VoxCell. Karolina was great to work with and it was Van- couver-based eFund that took the lead on the financ-

ing by negotiating a term sheet and prepping her for a deeper due diligence exercise. After a few months of hard work, eFund as lead investor was able to launch the term sheet and the VoxCell data room into the in- vestment community. Soon other funds like WUTIF, CIN Victoria, Archangel, Spring, Women’s Equity Lab chose to participate. Together with individual angels, they committed to a little over $2 million in VoxCell’s first ex- ternal common share round, which wrapped up in 2022.
